Useful Info

Get a Knife!

Most helpful tip I could give you is making sure you get a knife as fast as you can. A knife is a versatile survival tool that is a must to have on you. If you are not lucky to find a knife laying around, you can make a makeshift one from bones and small stones. Combine two stones/bones or look at a boulder with one stone/bone in your hand to make one. If does save on resources this way, but a good measure to take if you lost your knife.

NOTE: If you have a hammer or hammer like tool (etc Meat tenderizer, pipe wrench) you can make a knife by breaking down part of a big rock or a cliff

Cars are your best friends!

It’s the first day, you find yourself lost and confused, unsure where to go or what to do. The one thing you see in the distance is a house, so you do what anyone would… You run to it. Now your closer you realize is you got a few zombies around you, no weapons, a car just at the front of the house and a will to live.

I can advise you is run your little legs as fast as you can and jump onto that car like your life depends onto it… Because It does!

Zombies can’t climb the cars. So that’s literally your get out of jail free card throughout your lifetime within the game, because now you’re punching your way through to the house.

Multiple Function Weapons

Only a few tools throughout dayZ can be used for a different purpose then what they were intended for equipment like:

Hand Axe is naturally an Axe but can also act like a hammer.
Hoe/Shovel/Pickaxe have the same function when it comes to base building, farming plots or burying your containers.
Knife – Can opener? Knife. Gather firewood? Knife. Making rags? Knife. Skinning Animals/Humans? Skinning Humans are a very morbid thing to do but… your answer to that is Knife.

Clothing

One thing that is very handy to know is the amount of effect that your choice of clothing has on you physically… and I’m not talking about your taste in clothing. Not only each piece of clothing has its own different perks, like the amount of Item space one has or the amount of protection it can provide. Another big key factor when it comes to clothing is how much insulation a piece of clothing can provide. One major factor that can affect your insulation of your clothing is when your clothing is wet.

The effect hit very different for the amount liquor that gets onto your clothing, Like:

Damp clothes have little to no effect on the clothes insulation. And your possessions are unfazed.
Wet Clothes will their decreases their insulation and your items will be dry.
However…
You are drenched, everything inside your pockets will be wet.

This will have a chained effect on your character. Wet doesn’t just me cold and uncomfortable but means heavy. Heavy mean less stamina. Less stamina means you get killed easier.

My little secret for you is to get your hands on the hunter clothing set… It’s a great compromise of weight/ insulation/ water resistance and the space to put all your loot you find… that is if you are a loot hogs like me.

Loot Protection

Things will get damaged when you get hit. As a fellow loot goblin myself that is not acceptable. So, to protect them put them into a container. Some containers can protect items more than others, but it protects it non the less.

Most Hand grenades do not explode when place on a vest with the grenade slots. A big thing to remember is the container trick I just mention above, as it will eventually save your life. Grenades and gas Canisters will explode in your inventory if the equipment is damaged to ruined level. Chances of you dying first is higher than the items exploding first, but it’s a chance that can be avoided non the less. Keep gas cannister in the pot/pan keeps it protected.

Food Preparation

Hungry? Got a chicken you just killed? Do not… I repeat do not skin and quarter that chicken until you have got a source of water around or gloves on your hands. Skinning and quartering anything will cause your hands to become bloody and if not cleaned before eating will get you extremely sick.

Don’t stress if you don’t have any gloves, you can make improvised gloves at first. Then eventually replace them with gloves or combat gloves later, but first you need to make sure to protect your hands.

Ammo Quality

A little pointless fact for you to know that won’t affect any game play is…

Ammo quality does not affect of your jamming gun. The only difference between pristine and Badly damage is how many hits it will withstand from the arse whooping you are receiving from the zombie.

Help the medic… Be the medic

Out of all the medical items within the game tetracycline is incredibly important and useless at the same time providing you….

If you stay well fed and hydrated

don’t drink contaminated water, gasoline

eater uncooked meat, human flesh

and….

always sterile/ disinfected bandages.

You won’t need them… I will tell you now at the beginning of the game all of that is likely not to go in your favour, so tetracycline will be your life saver.

In your medical kit is important to have a heap of bandages or sterile rags and alcohol. If you can use Bandages, instead of the rags. As they are much quicker at stemming bleeds.

If your germy arse manages to get sick, make sure you throw away your mask, take tetracycline pills and do not share your water bottle with anyone else. Now that your better be sure to use chlorine tablets to clean your water bottle as it can still be contagious and get you reinfected with the flu.

Powdered Milk	Powdered milk is one of the best dry foods that a player can find. It gives the same amount of energy that a box of cereal gives, 400kcal, but it doesn’t take up nearly as much space, only 2 slots. It doesn’t offer any water, and it’s a bit dehydrating, but it can be found in all locations.
Venison Steak	Hunting is another way of obtaining food. There are several different animals that players can hunt for food and other resources. One of the best animals for a player to hunt is deer. There are several different deer that a player can hunt, they can hunt stags, does, roebucks and hinds. Hunting and killing a dear won’t just award the player with meat, but they’ll also get bones, fat, guts and a deer pelt, all of which have their own uses. Before claiming the meat, players must skin the deer and turn it into venison steaks. The best version of the venison steak to get the most energy out of it is to bake it. A baked venison steak will give 350kcal worth of energy and 50ml of water.
Honey	Honey is an uncommon item, so it might be a bit difficult to find, especially for players joining a server with a lot of people on it. Honey can be found in all civilian locations, like towns, schools, farms, etc. It takes up 4 slots in a player’s inventory and when eaten it will give 250kcal, but it won’t give the player any water. Just like all other canned food, if honey is left unopened it will never spoil. It’s also another food that doesn’t need to be cooked to be able to eat it safely.
Strawberry Jam	Strawberry jam is one of the best food items to come across. Strawberry jam is one of the canned foods that players can find if they search through houses. It takes up 4 slots in a player’s inventory, but it provides a lot of energy, giving 150kcal, and it also gives a bit of water, 50ml. As a canned food, if a player doesn’t open their strawberry jam, it will never spoil, making it a great food item to hold onto and save for when things get dire.
Canned Bacon	Out of all the canned foods that a player can get, the best one is probable canned bacon. Bacon in general is delicious, and it can be lifesaving for a player if they haven’t found anything else to eat. Canned bacon is a rare food item, and it can only be found in Military camps and bases, making it very difficult food to get. But for players who are brave, or players who are desperate, risking their lives for canned bacon will earn them 300kcal and 50ml of water. It won’t spoil if it’s never opened and players either need a knife or can opener to open it.
Canned Baked Beans	The more the player eats them the longer their chances of not dying from starvation are. Beans are another canned food item and a very common one, it takes up 4 slots in a player’s inventory. It gives 200kcal of energy when eaten and 50ml of water. It won’t spoil if its left unopened, and it doesn’t have to be cooked. The only downside is that a player will need to either find a can opener or a knife to be able to get inside the can.
Cereals	Cereals are categorized as Dry food. Most of them items here are some types of snacks like chips, cookies, crackers, and more. Out of the dry foods cereal is one of the best ones. They’re uncommon and can be found in all locations. The box does take up 9 Slots of inventory, but it gives 400kcal worth of energy, so sacrificing a little extra space might be worth it. It doesn’t need to be cooked and like canned foods, it will not spoil if it not left open extremely lucky players might find themselves finding a compass as a ‘price’ in their cereal box. Though the chance of that happening is very rare.
Mackerel Fillet	Fishing is one of the ways that players can acquire food. There are two ways that a player can fish, they can either use a fishing rod or use a fish trap. With either option, players must first craft a few items before they can fish. When it comes to making fish traps, players won’t need to craft a fishing hook or use bait as they must when using a fishing rod. Its best to keep the best weapon attachments on hand in case a hostile player seeks this bounty of the sea. One of the best fish that can be caught for food is a mackerel. Mackerels can be found in the green sea that’s off the coast of chernarus. Before players can eat a mackerel, they have a knife to gut and prepare the mackerel into fillets. Players should not eat the mackerel fillets raw as it will make them sic, and it won’t offer the most amount of energy. If a player makes a baked mackerel fillet it will give them 240kcal of energy and 40ml of water.
